Freeport Electric Takes an Active Role as a Green Leader: Secures New York Power Authority Solar Photovoltaic Incentive Program for the Freeport Community

Freeport, NY - As part of the effort to support Freeport's Mayor innovative campaign to lead its employees, customers and communities to a greener future, Freeport Electric secured New York Power Authority (NYPA) grant funding offered to its Municipal and Rural Electric Cooperative Customers for the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The $250,000 grant enables Freeport Electric to offer 61,000 watts of solar power to our customers at substantial savings.

"Freeport Electric is thankful and applauds NYPA in being a leader in renewable energy efforts. This grant is a significant step in implementing Freeport's Mayor initiative to invest in conservation and renewable energy and his commitment to increase renewable energy efforts in every department within the Village," said former Freeport Electric Superintendent Anthony Fiore.

The Solar Incentive Program reinforces Governor Paterson's "45 By 15" plan for New York to attain 45 percent of its electricity needs through improved energy efficiency and clean renewable energy by the year 2015.

Breaking down the cost barrier to a greener live-and-work community this incentive is offered to residential, commercial and municipal locations in the amount of $4 per watt. With a cap of $40,000 per site, this represents an offset of almost 50%. While still requiring a substantial investment by the recipient NYPA funding along with Federal and State tax benefits makes solar energy an affordable investment in our future.
