Freeport, N.Y. - April 30, 2018 - Freeport Electric has earned a “Diamond” designation as a Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) ® from the American Public Power Association for providing dependable and safe electric service. Neil James, Manager of Distribution Operations at Santee Cooper, South Carolina and chair of the Association’s RP3 Review Panel, presented the award on April 30 during the Association’s annual Engineering & Operations Technical Conference held in Raleigh, N.C.
This highest distinction RP3 classification, which lasts for three years, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate outstanding proficiency in four key disciplines: Reliability, Safety, Workforce Development, and System Improvement. Criteria include sound business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Freeport Electric joins more than 240 public power utilities nationwide that are granted one of the three levels (Diamond, Platinum, and Gold) of an RP3 honor. See our score summary (PDF)
“This designation is about more than just reliability. It’s about operational excellence,” said James. “These utilities and their communities should be proud to represent the best of the best in the areas of reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement.” Freeport Electric has the honor of attaining the “Diamond” designation for 2018 and shares this award with only 39 other public utilities throughout the contiguous United States. Though there are 39 other city or village utilities in New York State, none have attained this level of accomplishment during the past 3 years.
“It is a great honor to be awarded this highest distinction,” said Al Livingston, Superintendent of Electric Utilities at Freeport Electric. “Mayor Kennedy and I are very proud of the men and women that contribute to powering the Village of Freeport and are extremely pleased to receive this recognition for their personal contributions and continuous dedication in achieving outstanding job performance and unparalleled service to our customers.”
The Village of Freeport is the second largest rural community in the state of New York and one of the most diverse communities in Nassau County. It is located along the south shore of Nassau County on Long Island and occupies 4.6 square miles. As an incorporated village, Freeport takes pride in its own Municipal Electric, Water Utilities, Police Force, and Fire Department. The Village takes great satisfaction in its independence and the quality of life it helps to provide for its residents and the surrounding Long Island communities.
The American Public Power Association has offered the RP3 title for 13 years now. The Association is the voice of not-for-profit, community-owned utilities that power 49 million people in 2,000 towns and cities nationwide. The Association advocates and advises on electricity policy, technology, trends, training, and operations.
